From Web To Print:Maximising Impact With Minimal Space
After successfully launching the new website for the Dryden Enterprise Centre at Nottingham Trent University, we were thrilled to win the tender for designing their new promotional brochure. The existing brochure had become outdated and no longer aligned with the fresh, modern branding of The DEC.
Our challenge was clear: to display the wealth of information from the new website into a visually engaging and concise brochure that effectively showcased the Centre’s offerings. With a strict limit of 20 pages, our task was to create a brochure that was not only comprehensive but also captivating, ensuring that every detail was presented with clarity and impact.

Crafting An Engaging BrochureFor The Dryden Enterprise Centre
The brief provided by the DEC was both detailed and flexible. While it was crucial to include all technical sales information within a 20-page limit, we were granted creative freedom regarding the brochure’s size and design. This combination of clear guidelines and creative liberty allowed us to craft a brochure that not only met the brief but also pushed the boundaries of conventional brochure design.
Our prior work in rebranding the DEC’s website gave us a solid foundation to work from. The visual identity we had established online was modern, professional, and reflective of the Centre’s innovative spirit. With these elements in mind, we were able to seamlessly translate this aesthetic into a physical format, ensuring consistency across the DEC’s marketing materials.
We opted for an oversized, square brochure; a deliberate choice to enhance both visual appeal and practical functionality. The larger size ensured the brochure would have a strong presence when displayed on tables or left in communal areas, naturally drawing the eye and encouraging interaction. The square format, particularly with its 2:1 aspect ratio, provided an ideal canvas for showcasing content. This layout allowed each double-page spread to serve as a unified portal of information, making it easier for readers to digest and engage with the material.
HighlightingThe DEC's Stunning Visuals
In crafting the brochure, we made strategic use of negative space. Negative space, or the empty areas surrounding the content, plays a crucial role in graphic design. It prevents overcrowding of information, allowing key elements to stand out more clearly. By incorporating ample negative space, we ensured that the brochure’s content was not only accessible but also aesthetically pleasing.
For example, when showcasing the DEC’s office spaces, we paired detailed descriptions with ample negative space around the text and images. This approach highlighted the spaciousness and modern design of the facilities, reinforcing the Centre’s brand message. Additionally, the negative space around the photography drew attention to the quality and detail of the images, allowing the viewer to fully appreciate the DEC’s state-of-the-art environment.
Photography played a central role in the brochure’s design. The DEC provided us with a collection of high-quality images that captured the essence of the Centre—from its sleek, modern interiors to the vibrant, collaborative atmosphere. By giving these visuals plenty of room to breathe within the layout, we allowed the images to speak for themselves, effectively conveying the DEC’s unique appeal without the need for excessive text.
The combination of a square format, oversized layout, and careful use of negative space resulted in a brochure that was both visually striking and highly functional. It served not only as a promotional tool but also as a reflection of the DEC’s identity as a forward-thinking, dynamic institution.
