About Caroline Cox Marketing
Marketing strategy and delivery for family-run and growth-stage businesses. Led by a Chartered Marketer with over 25 years in the trenches.
Hello, I’m Caroline.
I set up Caroline Cox Marketing in 2019 after two decades working inside businesses of every shape and size. Corporate teams with half a million pound budgets. Community organisations running on nothing but goodwill. I can tell you honestly that neither is the easy option. Big budgets come with red tape and politics. Small budgets come with impossible expectations. What I learned in both worlds is that growth rarely fails because of a lack of ideas. It fails because nobody joins the ideas up.
Caroline Cox, Founder and Director
That’s the job I do now. I work alongside business owners as their senior marketing mind, building the strategy first and then making sure the delivery actually happens. No jargon, no vanity metrics, no promising you the moon. Just a clear plan, honest reporting, and marketing that’s realistic for your budget and your timeframe.
It took me a long time to work out that this was the job I was built for. I’ve spent my career as the person in the room who connects things: the sales team to the brand, the big idea to the operational reality, the ambition of the owner to what the budget can actually deliver. For years I thought everyone worked that way. It turns out they don’t, and it’s exactly what growing businesses are missing when marketing feels busy but nothing seems to move.
I’m a Chartered Marketer and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, which I mention not to impress you but because it matters to me that this profession is done properly. Marketing has a reputation problem, and it’s earned it. Too many business owners have been burned by agencies selling activity instead of outcomes. Part of why I do this job the way I do it is to be the counterexample.
What clients tend to notice first is that I ask a lot of questions before I suggest anything. What are you actually trying to build here? What does good look like in three years, not three months? Sometimes the honest answer to a marketing brief is that marketing isn’t the problem, and I’d rather tell you that in the first meeting than take a retainer for work that won’t move the needle.
The other thing they notice is that I genuinely care how it goes. Most of my clients are family-run or founder-led, which means the business isn’t an abstraction. It’s someone’s name above the door, their family’s security, the thing they’ve poured twenty years into. I don’t take that lightly, and I don’t think you can do this work well if you do.
A client once described what I do as “she simply makes things happen.” I’ve heard versions of it enough times since that we adopted it. It sums up how we work better than any strapline I could have written.
Who I work with
Most of my clients are family-run or founder-led businesses that have grown past the point where marketing can be done on the side, but aren’t ready for a full in-house team. They want someone senior enough to challenge their thinking and practical enough to get it done. If that sounds like you, we’ll probably get on.
The people behind the work
I don’t believe in pretending to be a big agency. I believe in working with brilliant specialists and being upfront about it.
Damian Brown, Creative Director and Freelance Graphic & Website Designer
Damian Brown is our creative director. Twenty years of brand and design work for international names, and the person I trust to make sure everything we produce looks as sharp as the thinking behind it.
John Starkie, Motion Director
John Starkie is our motion director. Nearly fifteen years in video, including heading up video for a digital agency, and he has a rare knack for turning complicated ideas into content people actually want to watch.
Between us, and the wider network of freelancers we bring in when a project needs them, we cover strategy, content, video, design and web from our base in Mansfield Woodhouse.

Helping You Reach Your Business Goals, and Beyond Them
Good marketing grows a business. But for many of the owners I work with, growth is only part of the story. Some are building towards an acquisition. Some are thinking, quietly, about what an exit might look like in five or ten years. Most have never said it out loud to anyone.
That’s why, alongside the consultancy, I advise founders on growth, acquisition and exit planning through Born Limitless.
The two strands feed each other. Twenty five years in marketing has taught me what makes a business valuable to the people who might one day buy it: a brand that doesn’t depend on the founder, revenue that repeats, customers who stay, and a story the market believes. These aren’t things you bolt on in the final year before a sale. They’re built over time, and the earlier you start, the more choices you have when the moment comes.
I’m not a corporate financier and I don’t pretend to be. When a deal needs accountants, lawyers or corporate finance specialists, I work alongside them, and some of my most valued relationships are with exactly those people. My role sits earlier in the journey: helping you build a business that’s genuinely ready, so that when the professionals get involved, you’re negotiating from strength.
If you’re starting to think beyond the next campaign to where your business is ultimately heading, that conversation is worth having sooner than you think.
